His practice centers on self portraiture, the human body, faith, identity, and the emotional experience of living in a particular place. Freeman began working in photography in the darkroom at Rockland District High School in 1992. His practice has since evolved into an intimate exploration of identity, masculinity, vulnerability, and spiritual longing. Drawing from his Catholic faith, scripture, and the quiet rituals of daily life, he uses the self-portrait as a means of examining the relationship between the physical body and inner experience. Influenced by the spiritual depth and contemplative ideals of the Nazarene movement of the early nineteenth century, Freeman approaches photography as a form of visual prayer, allowing the body to become a site where the sacred and the human converge.
